At West Cattle Company, we are proud to raise our pigs on acres and acres of pasture, where they get to live a harmonious life grazing, rooting and roaming.
Our pasture raised pigs are offered fresh grasses through strategized rotation methods throughout the year, so they are provided ample and continuous nutrition. The pigs eat a mixture of wheat, sunflower meal, rice bran, flaxseed meal and minerals when not roaming around and rooting in our pastures.
Like our cattle, our pigs are an extension of our family and are vital to the continued success of West Cattle Company. They enjoy living in the pastures right outside our back door and enjoy vegetable garden scraps or fall pumpkins.
We treat our animals with the utmost respect and care, using humane animal welfare practices. Our pigs are never introduced to artificial hormones or growth promotants. Our animals never see a feed lot. Ever. Our pork comes directly from our pasture to your table.
Deposits & Pricing
To initiate the ordering process, we require a deposit upon ordering. The remaining balance is due upon delivery. Deposits depend on the quantity of pork you order. For a whole pork the deposit is $200.
Currently, we charge $5.50/lb by the hanging weight minus the initial deposit. This price DOES NOT include processing. The $5.50/lb. charge goes to purchasing the animal only. The remaining balance will have the processing fees added to the final invoice. Cash or check is our preferred final payment option, but we do accept credit card payments with a 3% charge.
Hanging Weight vs. Packaged Weight
Hanging Weight: This is the weight of the butchered animal as it hangs in the locker to dry age. This weight does not include the head, hide, hooves, blood and innards, which have been removed.
Boxed Weight: This is the net weight of the meat you will receive that is packaged and ready for your freezer. You will be charged based on the hanging weight.
As a general rule on a well finished pasture raised pork, the hanging weight is 70% of the live weight and the boxed weight is on average about 70% of the hanging weight. Our average, half pork, hanging weight for 2022 was 200 pounds.
Recommended Freezer Space: 5 cubic feet for a pig half.
Example on a Whole Pork: Hanging weight is 200 lbs. The packaged meat will be approximately 70% of the 200 lbs., which would give you 140 lbs. of packaged meat/boxed pork.
A Whole pork has so many potential options for processing that it’s impossible to list what could “approximately” come with. With a 1/2 or whole pig you get the option to customize your pork to your personal preference. Please be aware that each animal is different and items vary depending on certain details (animal weight, steak cuts, size of roasts, etc.). Customer is responsible for processing fees.
We harvest our pasture raised pork once a year. Once it is harvested, your pig takes around 3 weeks to be ready for delivery.
